How to Commission Digital Art: A Complete Beginner's Guide

Never commissioned art before? This step-by-step guide walks you through everything — from writing a solid brief to what to expect during the revision process. No experience needed.

Why Most Commission Requests Fail

The number one reason commissions go wrong isn't the artist — it's the brief. Vague requests like "make it look cool" give the artist nothing to work with. The more specific you are upfront, the closer the first draft will be to what you actually want.

Step 1: Choose the Right Artist

Before you write a single word, find an artist whose existing work already looks like what you want. Don't commission a realistic portrait artist for a cartoon character. Browse their portfolio, check their style consistency, and make sure their price range fits your budget.

Tip: Save 3–5 examples of their work that you love before reaching out. Reference your own examples in your brief.

Step 2: Write a Solid Brief

A good brief covers: character description (appearance, personality, mood), the type of piece you want (portrait, full body, scene), color preferences, any references (other art, photos, mood boards), and intended use (personal, social media, merch).

  • Character name and personality
  • Physical description or reference sheet
  • Pose or expression you want
  • Color palette or mood references
  • File format and resolution needed

Step 3: Understand the Revision Process

Most artists offer 2–3 rounds of revisions. Use your first revision to address major structural issues (pose, composition, proportions). Save minor tweaks (color adjustments, small details) for later rounds. Asking for a complete redesign in round 3 is bad etiquette and may cost extra.

Step 4: Payment and Delivery

Most artists require a 50% deposit upfront, with the remainder due on delivery. Never pay 100% before seeing any work. Once you receive the final file, check the resolution and format before confirming completion. High-res PNG is standard for digital art.
